A Little Philanthropy

Michelle had the wonderful idea to leave some money with us to do something for children. With the help of Zefina Nicholas we found a school for Special Needs Children in Vieux Fort. She took me there and introduced me to the principal. There are so many needs and we gave what we could to help them. We hope to be able to continue contributing to them and to a boy's home in Grenada that we found to be a worthwhile cause.

They get some money from the government and corporations but do not have a constant source of income. Most of the families cannot afford the $80 EC yearly fee. The facility is in need of repairs and updating, painting and modernizing. They currently have a staff of 18 and there are about 80 students enrolled. They range in age from 4 months to 20 years. The range of disabilities is wide, hearing impaired, visually impaired, autism, cerebral palsy, Down's Syndrome and others. There were three pressing needs that the principal told me about: 1) a freezer, 2) playground equipment and 3) a sensory room. We hope that they can use what we gave to help with either of the last two because we didn't have enough money for a freezer.

This is the teacher of the youngest class and the principal. The teacher showed us around the facility and introduced us to the various classes. We got lots of hugs. They have a garden where they raise some of the food for their lunches. The boys were pulling weeds and we helped them. In turn they gave us some of the onions they were harvesting.

As you can see the playground could use some work.

If you would like to help make a difference contact us and we will arrange for you to help. Thanks to Michelle for the inspiration and to Zefina Nicholas for the suggestion of the school.
